Binaural/Nodar and the municipality of Castro Daire (Viseu Dão Lafões, Portugal), through their municipal library, have launched “Memory on Wheels” project, an integrated ethnographic research initiative of its rich cultural heritage which includes, among other things , the novelty of using an available resource, the municipal library van, which has also become a mobile sound and audiovisual recording studio.

The motto of the “Memory on Wheels” project is “We’re all heritage”, a way of showing that ethnographic knowledge resides in each village, in each house and in each family, being part of the flow of memories that come from ancestors and are projected to the future.

The project was developed in a wide range of initiatives:

  • Recordings of testimonies on the modes of playing in the parishes of Almofala and Monteiras and retrospective exhibition at the municipal library of Castro Daire.
  • Series of ethnographic interviews with local personalities held at the Castro Daire municipal library.
  • Set of collections on the chants of souls in the parish of Monteiras.
  • Collection on the memory of Carvalhal thermal baths.
  • Digitization and cataloging of the previous collections with inhabitants about symbolic places of the parishes of Castro Daire.
  • Digitization and cataloging of previous collections of soundscapes on the Paiva river.
