Open call for artist residencies
Until 28 February 2025
The Tramontana Network is a Creative Europe project aimed at Europe’s mountain areas, seen as key places for experimentation and social and cultural creation, and as bearers of a rich heritage. The partners making up the Tramontana network are cultural organisations operating in mountain areas of different European nations which, although unique, share common geographical and cultural aspects.
Moreover, for this network, spatial/synchronous (between different mountain areas) and diachronic (between generations and historical cycles) dialogue is a necessary condition for getting to know the diversity of the intangible cultural heritage that comprises it, as well as the expectations and demands for transformation of the people who live in these regions.
As part of the activities of the fourth edition of the Tramontana project, it is announced call for artistic projects to be developed as part of a programme of multidisciplinary artistic residencies, to be held between 2025 and 2027 in several European mountain areas: Central Massif (Viseu Dão Lafões region, Portugal), Pyrenees (Gascony and Commenges regions, France), Apennines (Teramo province, Italy) and Sudetes (Lower Silesia, Poland).
Individual or collective artists residing in a European country included in the Creative Europe programme can apply, and each selected artist will develop his or her project in two of the above-mentioned territories, thus promoting inter-territorial dialogue through artistic expression.
Eligible artistic fields may include multimedia arts, performance art, sound art, landscape installations, contemporary crafts, music, dance, etc., with an emphasis on projects that combine different artistic fields and have an artistic research dimension.
Artistic projects must also reflect and express one or more of the following territorial and social themes:
– Agropastoralism and transhumance.
– Water cultures (rivers, springs, fountains, water mills, irrigation systems, myths and symbolism linked to water, etc.).
– Social and cultural mobility and the perceptions generated on/by agricultural/mountain landscapes and food production.
– Ukrainian immigration and cross-perceptions of the landscapes and rural cultures of the places of origin and destination.
The results of the artistic projects to be hosted in residence will be presented to the rural communities where the residencies will be hosted and also as part of the project’s various international events.
Applications for the artist residencies will be accepted if sent before 28 February 2025 by email to info@re-tramontana.org and if they include:
– A project detailing the chosen theme, a work methodology and the type of artistic intervention
– A brief biography and detailed curriculum vitae
– URL references to other sources of information.
The artist residencies will take place between spring and autumn 2025, 2026 and 2027 and will last two weeks. Each partner in the Tramontana project will cover the costs of accommodation, meals and travel in the region, and will pay each selected project an artist’s fee of 500 euros gross.
